Finger Pricks – A Seven Year Old’s Perspective

I sat down with my seven year old boy to discuss finger pricks this morning.  Taking blood samples is such a part of our daily life, that he thought it might be helpful to give some tips and perspective to share with kids and parents just getting started.

How many times do you get your blood sugar tested?

I get my blood tested about 7 to 8 times a day.  When I wake up, morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner, before bed and once or twice during the night.

How does getting your finger pricked feel?

Like nothing.  It hurt in the beginning, but I got used to it.

Do you have favorite fingers on where to get tested?

Yes, my pointer and middle fingers.  The other fingers hurt some.  The pinky hurts the most.

Can you test yourself?

Yes!  no problem.

Do you know what will make the readings not come out right?

Yes!  if you have syrup or anything else with food on your fingers.  I have to wash my hands or use swab!

What does it feel like when you are low? and how fast do you feel better once you have had something to eat or drink?

I feel tired and don’t feel like doing anything.  It only takes me a few minutes to feel better.

What advice do you have for a kid that just got diagnosed wit Diabetes?

Don’t sneak food, keep your hands still when you are getting tested or it will make it hurt more.  Also tell your parents when you feel low, you will feel better fast when you have something to eat.  Wear your bracelet or dog tags that say that you have diabetes, I have some cool ones.  I just got a continuous glucose monitor, but haven’t tried it on yet.  I will let you know how it works!
